- The Nanny, Lana Ferguson
Story Blurb Suddenly unemployed and on the brink of eviction, Cassie Evans is left with two choices: get a new job (and fast) or fire up her long-untouched OnlyFans account. But the job market is terrible, and as for OnlyFans. . . . Well, there are reasons she can’t go back. Just when all hope seems lost, an ad for a live-in nanny position seems like the solution to all her problems. It’s almost too perfect—until she meets her would-be employer. Aiden Reid, executive chef and DILF extraordinaire, is far from the stuffy single dad Cassie was imagining. He shocks her when he tells her she’s the most qualified applicant he’s met in weeks, practically begging her to take the job. With hands that make her hindbrain howl and eyes that scream sex, the idea of living under the same roof as Aiden feels dangerous, but with no other option, she decides to stay with him and his adorably tenacious daughter, Sophie. Cassie soon discovers that Aiden is not a stranger at all, but instead someone who is very familiar with her—or at least, her body. Given that he doesn’t remember her, Cassie is faced with what feels like an impossible situation. As their relationship heats to temperatures hotter than any kitchen Aiden has ever worked in, Cassie struggles with telling Aiden the truth, and the more terrifying possibility—losing the best chance at happiness she’s ever had. My Thoughts/Opinion Once I allowed myself to suspend disbelief of the statistical improbability of the premise, I was able to enjoy the book. The writing, the heat, and the side characters were great. I loved Cassie and Aiden and their chemistry was so good! This was a fun quick read and I will happily pick up another title from this author. Favorite Quote: “I’m angry that you dealt with this alone. I’m angry that you spent all this time worrying that I would push you away without giving me the chance to tell you that there is absolutely no way I’m letting you get away again.”
- Throne of Glass (series), Sarah J. Maas
Story Blurb In a land without magic, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She has no love for the vicious king who rules from his throne of glass, but she has not come to kill him. She has come to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three murderers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she will be released from prison to serve as the King’s Champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien. The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. And a princess from a faraway country will befriend her. But something rotten dwells in the castle, and it’s there to kill. When her competitors start dying mysteriously, one by one, Celaena’s fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival—and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world. My Thoughts/Opinion I really don't even know where to start with this series. It was Epic. Sweeping. Saga. I read all 8 books in this series in about 8 weeks. And these are not tiny novels. But the story stole every available brain cell I had so I had no choice but to power through it. I just HAD to know how it ended. I loved the multiple points of view. I loved not just the love story (stories), but the world, the sacrifice, the snippets of joy where they could be found. How everything came full circle. And that incredible ending. Storytelling heaven. I put off reading this for years because of the hype and my fear that it would underwhelm me or disappoint me when so many others love it so much. Thankfully, the series lived up to every effusive praise I ever heard. If you're on the fence about committing to reading it, I hope this post puts you over the edge. My fave quote is probably the most quoted from the book, but there isn't a better one to encapsulate this entire series. Favorite Quote: “You could rattle the stars," she whispered. "You could do anything, if only you dared. And deep down, you know it, too. That’s what scares you most.”
- Promise Me Sunshine, Cara Bastone
Story Blurb Lenny’s a bit of a mess at the moment. Ever since cancer stole away her best friend, she has been completely lost. She’s avoiding her concerned parents, the apartment she shared with her best friend, and the ever-laminated “live again” list of things she’s promised to do to survive her grief. But maybe if she acts like she has it all together, no one will notice she’s falling apart. The only gigs she can handle right now are temporary babysitting jobs, and she just landed a great one, helping overworked, single mom Reese and her precocious daughter, Ainsley. The only catch: Ainsley’s uncle, Miles, always seems to be around, and is kind of. . . a walking version of the grumpy cat meme. Worse – he seems to be able to see right through her. Surprisingly, Miles knows a lot about grief and he offers Lenny a proposition. He’ll help her complete everything on her “live again” list if she’ll help him connect with Ainsley and overcome his complicated relationship with Reese. Lenny doubts anything can fill the void her best friend has left behind, but between late night ferry rides, midnight ramen, and a well-placed shoulder whenever she needs it, Miles just won’t stop showing up for her. Turns out, sometimes your life has to end to find your new beginning. My Thoughts/Opinion Wow. This book. Friends to lovers. Grief. Loss. Finding yourself again. Finding love. This book had it all. It's now my favorite ever friends to lovers book. I loved Lenny and Miles so much. Gosh, the feelings this book evoked. I'm still not over it. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up. One warning though. If you are dealing with a great loss in your life this book touches deep deep deep on this subject. Favorite Quote: "So you'll come with me if I ask?" His eyes pierce me in the shadows of the kitchen. "Lenny, I'll do anything you ask me to."
- Say You'll Remember Me, Abby Jimenez
Story Blurb There's no such thing as a perfect guy, but Xavier Rush comes disastrously close. A gorgeous veterinarian giving Greek god vibes—all while cuddling a tiny kitten? Immediate yes. That is until Xavier opens his mouth and proves that even sculpted gods can say the absolute wrong thing. Like, really wrong. Of course, there’s nothing Samantha loves more than proving an asshole wrong . . . unless, of course, he can admit he made a mistake. But after one incredible and seemingly endless date, Samantha is forced to admit the truth, that her family is in crisis and any kind of relationship would be impossible. Samantha begs Xavier to forget her. To remember their night together as a perfect moment, as crushing as that may be. Only no amount of distance or time is enough to forget what's between them. And the only thing better than one single perfect memory is to make a life—and even a love—worth remembering. My Thoughts/Opinion I sincerely don't think Abby could write a book I didn't love. Say You'll Remember Me is a poignant story about sacrificial love and loss. I loved Sam's humor and Xavier...oh my. Thank you Abby for all the Rysand (ACOTAR) references. Too funny! If I had one tiny complaint(?) about this book, it would be that the ultimate resolution probably could have been determined much sooner. But then again, the book would have been shorter which would have been a crime. In my opinion, you can never go wrong with more words from Abby. I hope she keeps these beautiful stories coming for many years to come. Favorite Quote: “There is nothing more beautiful than being a witness to someone's life. To know them inside and out and be with them through everything, share the same memories. Memories are everything, I want that.”
- This Bird has Flown, Susanna Hoffs
Story Blurb Jane Start is thirty-three, broke, and recently single. Ten years prior, she had a hit song—written by world-famous superstar Jonesy—but Jane hasn’t had a breakout since. Now she's living out of four garbage bags at her parents’ house. Rock bottom. But when her longtime manager Pippa sends Jane to London to regroup, she’s seated next to an intriguing stranger on the flight—the other Tom Hardy, an elegantly handsome Oxford professor of literature. Jane is instantly smitten by Tom, and soon, truly inspired. But it’s not Jane’s past alone that haunts her second chance at stardom, and at love. Is Tom all that he seems? And can Jane emerge from the shadow of Jonesy's earlier hit, and into the light of her own? In turns deeply sexy, riotously funny, and utterly joyful, This Bird Has Flown explores love, passion, and the ghosts of our past, and offers a glimpse inside the music business that could only come from beloved songwriter Susanna Hoffs. My Thoughts/Opinion This book was recommended to me by a good friend. She had me intrigued when she said this was written by the lead singer of the Bangles. I read it in a couple of sittings and was definitely curious about where it would go and how it would resolve. I think the thing that still has been trying to decide if I enjoyed it or not was that one of the main characters had such an egregious moral failing (one that I would find hard to accept in real life), I'm not sure if that person really deserves the HEA. I don't know. I'm still conflicted. So as my friend told me, the book was well done because even now I'm still thinking about it. I also recommend reading this one instead of listening to the audio. Though the musical tidbits were nice in the audio, the female narrator sounded like she was 18 and the FMC was early 30s so that also threw me off a bit. Favorite Quote: “I began to relax into it. To love it. To love the caress of the notes, vibrating in my throat, the exhilaration of setting them free, letting them sail into the air. The best kind of flying—no seat belts, no turbulence, only clear blue skies”
- None of This is True, Lisa Jewell
Story Blurb Celebrating her forty-fifth birthday at her local pub, popular podcaster Alix Summer crosses paths with an unassuming woman called Josie Fair. Josie, it turns out, is also celebrating her forty-fifth birthday. They are, in fact, birthday twins. A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix’s children’s school. Josie has been listening to Alix’s podcasts and thinks she might be an interesting subject for her series. She is, she tells Alix, on the cusp of great changes in her life. Josie’s life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can’t quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast. Slowly she starts to realize that Josie has been hiding some very dark secrets, and before she knows it, Josie has inveigled her way into Alix’s life—and into her home. But, as quickly as she arrived, Josie disappears. Only then does Alix discover that Josie has left a terrible and terrifying legacy in her wake, and that Alix has become the subject of her own true crime podcast, with her life and her family’s lives under mortal threat. Who is Josie Fair? And what has she done? My Thoughts/Opinion I don't often read psychological thrillers but this one was highly recommended to me so I went for it. Lisa Jewell is a master of misdirection. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going (or that it couldn't possibly go...there), she proved me wrong. Excellent writing. As an HEA girlie, it was nice to go on a side trip that still leaves me thinking about the book well after I've finished it. Favorite Quote: “When she doesn’t like the reality of things, she finds a reality she prefers.”
- Done and Dusted: A Rebel Blue Ranch Novel, Lyla Sage
Story Blurb For the first time in her life, Clementine “Emmy” Ryder has no idea what she’s doing. She’s accomplished everything on her to-do list. She left her small hometown of Meadowlark, Wyoming; went to college; and made a career for herself by doing her favorite thing: riding horses. But after an accident makes it impossible for her to get back into the saddle, she has no choice but to return to the hometown she always wanted to escape. Luke Brooks is Meadowlark’s most notorious bad boy, bar owner, and bachelor. He’s also the unofficial fifth member of the Ryder family. As Emmy’s older brother’s best friend, Luke spent most of his childhood antagonizing her. It’s been years since he’s seen her, but when she walks into his bar and back into his life, he can’t take his eyes off her. Despite his better judgment, he wants to do a whole lot more than just look at her. Emmy’s got too much on her mind to think about romance. And Luke knows he should stay away from his best friend’s younger sister. But what if Luke is just what Emmy needs to get her spark back? Or will they both go up in flames? My Thoughts/Opinion I had heard a lot about this series and finally decided to pick it up. The sexy banter was fun, the characters were engaging and overall I enjoyed the book. The main driver for the FMC to return home seemed to get glossed over and pretty conveniently resolved which I struggled with a little bit. I also thought the "your brother will hate me if we're together thing" thing could have (and should have) been resolved with a simple adult conversation amongst thirty-something year old men. The writing style was fun and I did root for the HEA so at some point I'll likely go pick up the second book in the series. Favorite Quote: “There was something in her eyes I hadn’t realized was missing when I’d looked at her before: fire. I started walking toward her, unable to help myself, ready to get burned.”
- The Ex-Vows, Jessica Joyce
Story Blurb Georgia Woodward lives by her lists, none more so than the one about her ex, Eli Mora. It’s full of the ironclad dos and don’ts they’ve been following since she returned to the Bay Area after their cataclysmic breakup five years ago. With the wedding of their mutual best friend, Adam, looming, and them about to step into their roles as best woman and man, Georgia’s never needed it more. She refuses to threaten their tight-knit friend group with her messy—and still very present—feelings. The rules on that list will keep her cool, calm, and compartmentalized. What’s not on her list? Eli arriving from New York with a new rule-breaking attitude or the all-inclusive venue burning to the ground, leaving the bride and groom in dire straits. Nor does she anticipate Adam asking her and Eli to help him make a miracle happen. Together. As Georgia and Eli rush up to Napa Valley to pull off the perfect wedding, their old chemistry comes back in technicolor. Somewhere between cake tastings gone wrong, disastrous DJ auditions, and Eli’s heated attention, Georgia starts recognizing the man she fell in love with before. And if she lets herself break her rules, she might find what they’re building isn’t the something old that ruined them—it’s a chance at something new. My Thoughts/Opinion I loved Jessica's first book, You With A View, so much. And just like that book, this one pulls at every heartstring. She writes with such a depth of emotion and puts her characters in such heartrending situations I wonder how she will end with an HEA. Georgia and Eli are both relatable characters whose childhood trauma has driven the adult decisions that tore them apart. I loved loved loved their journey back together. I highly recommend anything this author writes! Favorite Quote: “When I say I’m still in love with you,” he says quietly, “I mean today and yesterday and this entire week. I mean at Nick and Miriam’s wedding and I mean for the past five years.” If possible, he gets even quieter, but now he’s closer so I get every word. “When I say I’m still in love with you, I mean the first time I saw you and right now. I mean every second in between.”
- The Irish Goodbye, Amy Ewing
Story Blurb Cordelia James was once at the top of her game—a renowned street photographer with a massive social media following, gallery showings in Chelsea, and a lucrative book deal. But after the sudden death of her father, Cordelia can barely force herself to leave her apartment. That is, until she sees an ad for a summer gig at a cozy cottage on Ireland’s picturesque Inishmore island. Cordelia is on a plane before she can talk herself out of it. The moment she steps off the boat, she crashes—literally—into Niall O’Connor, a grumpy local who’s just returned home to Inishmore from Dublin. Niall is nursing a broken heart and trying to patch up a broken life, and he has no time for posh American tourists. The more Cordelia’s and Niall’s paths cross, the more they make each other’s lives hell. But as with all rivalries, their hatred is about to reach a tipping point—and it’s going to heat up their cool coastal nights. My Thoughts/Opinion This was a cute, fairly predictable rom-com but a good palate cleanser after reading a long romantasy series. The story started a bit slowly and I struggled to feel invested in either of the main characters. The setting and the side characters were fun and entertaining but that shouldn't be what one enjoys most about a romance. Favorite Quote:
- War of Lost Hearts Trilogy, Carissa Broadbent
Story Blurb Book 1, Daughter of No Worlds A former slave fighting for justice. A reclusive warrior who no longer believes it exists. And a dark magic that will entangle their fates. Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life. Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders. The Orders’ intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. But even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future… or the downfall of them both. But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders’ deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart. Even if it means wielding death itself. My Thoughts/Opinion I only included the blurb for book one because I wouldn't want to spoil one second of this amazing romantasy trilogy. When I tell you I submersed myself in this series, I mean it. I read the entire enthralling beautiful rich cinematic story in less than a week and these are not short stories. I love Tisaanah and Max as much or more than any book couple ever. I enjoyed this author's other work and expected to enjoy this as well, but certainly not to the depth in which I did. When I wasn't reading I was thinking about it. It's been a bit now since I finished and just typing this makes me want to go back and read it again. So so so good!! Favorite Quote: “I wanted him in so many ways. As a friend, as a kindred soul, as a fierce teammate. As skin and lips and teeth. As a hitched breathless moan in the darkness or a lazy embrace in the sunrise. I wanted that. I wanted it all.”
- The Things We Leave Unfinished, Rebecca Yarros
Story Blurb Twenty-eight-year-old Georgia Stanton has to start over after she gave up almost everything in a brutal divorce—the New York house, the friends, and her pride. Now back home at her late great-grandmother’s estate in Colorado, she finds herself face-to-face with Noah Harrison, the bestselling author of a million books where the cover is always people nearly kissing. He’s just as arrogant in person as in interviews, and she’ll be damned if the good-looking writer of love stories thinks he’s the one to finish her grandmother’s final novel…even if the publisher swears he’s the perfect fit. Noah is at the pinnacle of his career. With book and movie deals galore, there isn’t much the “golden boy” of modern fiction hasn’t accomplished. But he can’t walk away from what might be the best book of the century—the one his idol, Scarlett Stanton, left unfinished. Coming up with a fitting ending for the legendary author is one thing, but dealing with her beautiful, stubborn, cynical great-granddaughter, Georgia, is quite another. But as they read Scarlett’s words in both the manuscript and her box of letters, they start to realize why Scarlett never finished the book—it’s based on her real-life romance with a World War II pilot, and the ending isn’t a happy one. Georgia knows all too well that love never works out, and while the chemistry and connection between her and Noah is undeniable, she’s as determined as ever to learn from her great-grandmother’s mistakes—even if it means destroying Noah’s career. My Thoughts/Opinion Oh, my goodness. She did it again. How many books can this woman write that yank so hard at my heartstrings? The dual timelines in this story add so much richness and the human-ness of the characters, especially the glimpses of Scarlett as a young woman in love are done so well. The sweetness of the resolution to this story will stick with me for a long time. Definitely pick this one up when you need a good sacrificial love story. Favorite Quote: “I see the way he looks at her, like she’s the reason the seasons change and the sun rises until they’re a hundred and one years old.”
- Scythe & Sparrow, Brynne Weaver
Story Blurb Doctor Fionn Kane is running from a broken heart, one he hopes to mend in small-town Nebraska, far away from his almost-fiancé and his derailed surgical career. It’s a simpler life: head down, hard work, and absolutely no romantic relationships. He wants none of the circus he left behind in Boston. But then the real circus finds him. Motorcycle performer Rose Evans has spent a decade on the road with the Silveria Circus, and it suits her just fine, especially when she has the urge to indulge in a little murder when she’s not in the spotlight. But when a kill goes awry and she ends up with an injured leg, Rose finds herself stuck in Nebraska, at the home of the adorably nerdy town doctor. The problem is, not every broken heart can be sewn back together. . . . And the longer you stay in one place, the more likely your ghosts are to catch up. My Thoughts/Opinion I really enjoyed the conclusion of this trilogy and the post story excerpts that bring us all the way back to Sloane and Rowan from Butcher & Blackbird. Fionn and Rose have incredible chemistry. I was a little disappointed in the lack of filling out Fionn's tragic broken heart backstory which was why he was where he was mentally and physically. And I'm not exactly sure the timelines added up between book two and three, which kind of took place in the same continuum, but the writing and the love story were enough to still to sustain this book as a great read for me. Favorite Quote: “It's okay to love your darkness and still love yourself. It doesn't make you a bad person. It makes you a whole one.”
