  • It Ends With Us, Colleen Hoover

I've been a CoHo fan for many, many years way back to the days of Hopeless. I've always enjoyed her writing style and although this book tackles tough topics, Colleen Hoover shines. Story Blurb Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. And when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life seems too good to be true. Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place. As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened. My Thoughts/Opinion This book was tough and comes with trigger warnings for domestic abuse victims and survivors. I like the complexity of the story line and very few people are able to write such compelling and realistic dialogue. Favorite Quote/Scene: “I think about how sometimes, no matter how convinced you are that your life will turn out a certain way, all that certainty can be washed away with a simple change in tide. ”

  • One True Loves, Taylor Jenkins Reid

One True Loves was my first TJR novel. It was a gift to me for which I am so grateful. Not a traditional romance, but an incredibly engaging read. Story Blurb In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure. On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever. Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness. That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves. Who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly? Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying. My Thoughts/Opinion The premise of the story is such a tragically tough choice Emma must make. The writing is so incredibly engaging, I forgot more than once that I was reading someone else's story. If you haven't read this author, this book is a great place to start. Favorite Quote/Scene: “Just because something isn’t meant to last a lifetime doesn’t mean it wasn’t meant to be.”

  • First Star I See Tonight, Susan Elizabeth Phillips

First Star I See Tonight is part of SEP's long-running Chicago Stars series. While there are many books in that series that I absolutely adore, this one just got on the inside of me and wouldn't let go. Story Blurb A star quarterback and a feisty detective play for keeps in this sporty, sexy, sassy novel—a long-awaited new entry in the beloved, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author’s fan-favorite Chicago Stars football series. Piper Dove is a woman with a dream—to become the best detective in the city of Chicago. First job? Trail former Chicago Stars quarterback, Cooper Graham. Problem? Graham’s spotted her, and he’s not happy. Which is why a good detective needs to think on her feet. “The fact is . . . I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just . . . mildly unhinged.” Piper soon finds herself working for Graham himself, although not as the bodyguard he refuses to admit he so desperately needs. Instead, he’s hired her to keep an eye on the employees at his exclusive new nightclub. But Coop’s life might be in danger, and Piper’s determined to protect him, whether he wants it or not. (Hint: Not!) If only she weren’t also dealing with a bevy of Middle Eastern princesses, a Pakistani servant girl yearning for freedom, a teenager who just wants of fit in, and an elderly neighbor demanding Piper find her very dead husband. And then there’s Cooper Graham himself, a legendary sports hero who always gets what he wants—even if what he wants is a feisty detective hell bent on proving she’s as tough as he is. From the bustling streets of Chicago to a windswept lighthouse on Lake Superior to the glistening waters of Biscayne Bay, two people who can’t stand to lose will test themselves and each other to discover what matters most. My Thoughts/Opinion First Star I See Tonight's two main characters were so easy to fall in love with. I wanted them to get their HEA so badly! SEP's writing is also so quick-witted, I found myself LOLing often. But the kicker for me was ultimately the characters laying bare their fears, and what that meant for opening the door to their future. Favorite Quote/Scene: "I don't think I can do this." "I hope you're wrong, because I gave you my word of honor. I said if you talked to me today, I wouldn't try to contact you again." His head dipped and when he looked back up, she saw so much misery in his eyes she felt as if her own raw emotions were staring back at her. "This is all I've got, Piper," he whispered. "I can't do the last part for you. Either you show up...or you don't." And that was all. He walked away.
